Single Vineyard

The story of Marble Hill began in the 1860s when South Australian landowner and parliamentarian Sir Samuel Davenport was given a cutting of “chardonuet” by a French horticulturist. Somehow, and history is not clear on the sequence of events that led to this, the cutting came to be grown in the South Australian Governor’s summer residence, a property known as Marble Hill in the Adelaide Hills. The vines eventually came to the attention of renowned wine industry pioneer David Wynn, who took a cutting and propagated further vines at a nursery in Adelaide.

He planted them out on a beautiful elevated site on his Mountadam vineyard in 1972, making these the oldest cool climate chardonnay vines in Australia. It is believed that this clone, which he called Marble Hill, no longer exists anywhere else in the world - the Marble Hill property was eventually destroyed by fire and in France, from where the clone originated, the vineyards were wiped out by phylloxera.

Mountadam, a proud estate, has surged back into top gear over the last few years, crafting some truly stellar wines. I love the use of oak here. Not shy, following 12-14 months in barrique, it nevertheless serves as an adjunct, toning the cavalcade of stone fruit flavours while providing welcome signposts for the savoury, exceptionally long, solidsy/nutty finish. The acid is a plume. Juicy and palate-whetting. As Burgundian as Australia gets.

Selected parcels of grapes from the best sites of the vineyard are individually fermented and matured separately for 20-24 months in French barriques, the best barrels blended and held in bottle for another year before release. This is a compelling wine, its quality coming through the bouquet and perfectly balanced and long medium-bodied palate. Dark berry fruits, cedary oak and supple tannins all contribute, but fruit is by some distance the most important.

A cool, dry continental climate with soils of low fertility (over 500 million years old) is a forbidding site to grow grapes.  It does however, provide the opportunity to produce special wines of great concentration and elegance.

An estate-grown blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot separately fermented and matured in French barriques for 20-24 months, a barrel selection blended and bottle-aged for 12 months before release. The extra elevation of High Eden makes the difference for an attractive, supple and well balanced wine that glides on titanium castors and its cassis fruit and black olive a background whisper.

From the oldest plantings on the estate, fermented in French oak, matured for 12-14 months before a barrel selection for this wine, which is one of the best produced ex the Eden Valley as a whole. It has fluid grace and effortless power, the fruit flavours at the midpoint of the stone fruit (white peach)/citrus (grapefruit) spectrum. Lovely wine.

'Exceptional riesling! Bravo! A seam of transparent, juicy acidity transports yuzu spice, grapefruit pulp, nashi gelato and lemon drop flavours long. Mellifluous. Graceful. A sophisticated spellbinding wine. Fresh, but nothing tangy, nor hard.'

'Superlative gris in the context of Australia, playing off the estate's highly skilled hand when it comes to eking out textural complexity and interplay of freshness, flavour and chew. The usual stream of apple and pear sparks curiosity more because of the phenolic grip and savoury aura, finishing with a hint of marzipan. More Alsatian than domestic. All for the better.'

'A grapey, highly aromatic shiraz, playing the reductive card with a deft hand. Lilac lift caresses blue fruits aromas all, a whiff of salty iodine and terrine, pushed to a svelte finish by an effortless flow of peppery acidity. This is the sort of shiraz I enjoy drinking: mid-weight, savoury, fresh and reminiscent of the every day expressions from the northern Rhone, embellished with Aussie fruit.'
